Lots of people I know have been asking me what it is like to work with an online business coach. So in today’s post, I’m giving you a basic rundown on what to expect when you hire a coach of your own. The opinions in this article are just that, opinions. This article summarizes some of what I’ve learned about the coaching industry during my work with the four online coaches I’ve hired in the past.

With SO many new and existing businesses moving online in recent years, it’s become a lot more difficult to get noticed in the marketplace.

With SO many new and existing businesses moving online in recent years, it’s become a lot more difficult to get noticed in the marketplace. Depending on your situation, your work with an online business coach could spell the difference between failure and multiple six-figures (or more). Personally speaking, I’ve seen a dramatic and consistent increase in my business revenues since having started working with an online business coach.

Any significant business investment comes with worries and doubts. Hiring a business coach is expensive so it can be scary. Hold on, because I’m about to tell you some surefire indicators to help you determine whether you’ve made the right choice about hiring your coach, and what the typical online business coaching process should look like.

In cases where the coach doesn’t share your specific expertise…

When I hired my first online business coach, I was a bit worried because the coach came from a linguistics background and the business I was working on is a data science consultancy. I was seriously wondering how an arts person could help me grow a tech business. In this particular case, she did an amazing job but not all coaches are the same, so read on…

In cases where an online business coach doesn’t have specific expertise in the subject matter of the business, I’m sure a lot of people worry the same way I did. Speaking from experience, I’d say that concern is only half legitimate.

Pure and simple, a business coach specializes in business growth. We deliver strategies that, once implemented upon, increase customer engagement, sales, and the overall reach of your product or service.

As far as subject matter expertise in your business sector, you shouldn’t need another expert in what YOU do – you’ve got you for that!

Simply put, when you work with a business coach, you get access to additional areas of expertise for your business – namely business development, management, and growth strategies.

We techies need actionable, strategic instructions that are delivered in a logical structure. Few coaches from the arts backgrounds will be equipped to deliver a coaching program like that.

That said, there are different types of online business coaches. The majority of online business coaches that I’ve come across are from an arts background (ie; communications, wellness, psychology, etc.). If you come from the STEM fields, you have years (if not decades) of structured and pragmatic thinking ground into your approach to life. You may find that those “creative” online business coaches are of little to no value to you, because of the structure they tend to lack. We techies need actionable, strategic instructions that are delivered in a logical structure. Few coaches from the arts backgrounds will be equipped to deliver a coaching program like that.

What results will I see for my investment?

Ok, it is never cheap to work with an online business coach. I’ve spent over $10k in my work with online business coaches so far. Coaching is not cheap, but per my experience, it’s 100000% worth it.

Typically, when you work with an online business coach, you’ll see both short-term and long-term gains.

The more immediate benefits come in the form of new strategies, instructions, and ideas that you can use to grow your business, online communities, and revenues.

The real benefits of coaching, however, appear after you’ve begun implementing the suggestions that your coach provides.

Getting your business to six-figures takes some serious determination and hard work. It’s the job of a business coach to guide and instruct you. It is your job to implement and execute upon those instructions. You’ll only reap the benefits of your investment if you follow through and take actions that earn you your results.

What’s the typical first step when you work with an online business coach?

Well, each coach designs their program differently. In my opinion, the most crucial first step is vision-setting. A good coach will work with you through different mediums, to help you craft a vision for your future business and the lifestyle that’s to surround it. The process might involve questionnaires, worksheets, live conversations and/or activities. The work you do in this phase should be as in-depth as possible, because you’re crafting a vision that will help keep you inspired and motivated during certain hard times ahead.
